New Keynotes:
Meglena Kuneva, Former Commissioner of Consumer Protection at the European Commission. Before she has worked as a journalist for the Law Programme of the Bulgarian National Radio while being an Assistant Professor at Sofia University. In 1990 she took a job as Senior Legal Advisor at the Council of Ministers and held it until 2001. In June 2001 she was elected a Member of Bulgarian Parliament. In August 2001 Kuneva left her position in the Bulgarian parliament because she was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chief Negotiator of the Republic of Bulgaria with the European Union. She represented the Bulgarian Government in the Convention on the Future of Europe (the European Convention), which designed the EU Constitutional Treaty (the European Constitution). In May 2002 she was appointed Bulgaria's first Minister of European Affairs. She held that job even after the 2005 parliamentary elections; On 26 October 2006 Kuneva was nominated to be Bulgaria's first member of the European Commission assigned the portfolio of Consumer Protection, a position she held until early 2010 . She was chosen as European of the Year for 2008 by the European Voice and Commissioner of the Year by the European Observer. She is chairing the Interim evaluation of the AAL Joint Programme for the European Commission.
• Patricia A. Moore, President of MooreDesign Associates LLC, will be attending the AAL Forum as a keynote speaker. A an internationally renowned gerontologist and designer, she is a leading authority on consumer lifespan behaviours and requirements. In a unique experiment, she spent three years (1979-1982) travelling throughout the United States and Canada disguised as an elderly woman. A frequent international lecturer, media guest and author of numerous articles, she has written DISGUISED: A True Story, The Business of Aging, and OUCH! Why Bad Design Hurts.
• Rick Cnossen is the director of Personal Health Enabling for Intel in its Digital Health Group with a focus on medical device interoperability standards. He is currently leading a large, international, cross-industry consortium, the Continua Health Alliance, focused on the establishment of an eco-system of interoperable, personal telehealth systems. Mr. Cnossen holds a MSCS degree from the University of Southern California (USC). He worked at McDonnell Douglas (Boeing) for 15 years as a Software Engineering Manager and at Intel Corporation for 9 years as an Engineer Manager and Director. During this time, he has been involved in many industry technology and standards development efforts.
• Terrance (Terry) J. O’Shea, Ph.D. is the senior principal engineer and lead technologist in Intel’s Digital Health Group’s Product Research and Innovation Team. O’Shea joined Intel in 1997 as a staff engineer, designing and developing the interface between the processor and chipset for the Pentium® II, Pentium® III and Pentium® 4 systems.
During his tenure at Intel, O’Shea served on the faculty of the State University of New York at Buffalo and has co-authored two textbooks. He is the author of more than 80 other publications in electronic packaging, biomedical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, sensor networks, sensing, and structural mechanics. In addition, he holds 53 patients and has 48 patents pending.
With over 18 years’ experience, O’Shea is considered a pioneer in the field of sensor networks for healthcare applications. O’Shea was a key Principal Investigator (PI) and CTO in the team that launched the Technology Research for Independent Living (TRIL) Centre in Dublin, Ireland in 2007. O’Shea has been a PI or Co-PI on over $8M in other grants from various organizations including Intel Research, Microsoft Research, National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Health.
O’Shea chaired the committee developing a roadmap for desktop computer systems for the National Electronic Manufacturers Initiative (NEMI) for nine years.

What is the AAL Forum?
The Ambient Assisted Living Forum (AAL FORUM) is the yearly conference of the AAL Joint Programme, which aims to invest around €700 million in products and services from now to 2013.
The Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme, funded by 23 European states and the European Commission, aims to use smart technology to give greater independence and dignity to elderly people who are socially isolated, frail, suffer from chronic conditions or have disabilities, developing innovative solutions to deal with such problems as preventing falls and supporting sufferers of dementia.
