PREPARIO

The PREPARIO solution for automated re-heating of delivered meals consist of a microwave oven that make use of a novel temperature sensing technology. For the first time the meal temperature is measured during microwave heating and used to control the heating of the meal in a fully automated way, enabling a controlled and consistent heating result. A user friendly and connected voice assistance tailored for seniors gives the microwave oven a voice, serving as acoustic feedback and can e.g., remind the user that the meal is ready. Anonymous data from the meal preparation process is stored in the cloud and used to structure useful reports and alerts for care providers and meal services, enabling timely and critical assistance. Results and knowledge gained from the project is shared on the project website and demonstration events will be organized to showcase our solutions at European municipalities and end-user organisations.

Objectives:

Many seniors rely on delivered meals that they re-heat manually at home before serving – typically using a microwave oven. Unfortunately, the re-heating process can be rather challenging and it often happens that the meals get overly cooked. This leads to inedible meals and creates a high demand for external problem solving and assistance with meal preparation. To overcome this, the PREPARIO project aim to deliver an automated meal heating solution, enabling seniors to re-heat their meals safely and independently at home and additionally supplying a safety net of connected and data-driven support functions.

Expected Results and Impact:

It is expected that PREPARIO will have a direct benefit and positive impact in the quality of life of seniors (primary end-users), due to the fact that seniors will be able to re-heat their delivered meals safely and independently on a daily basis. This is expected to drastically decrease the need for external assistance for meal preparation (secondary end-users), enabling a more efficient allocation of resources. Furthermore, care providers that are still needed to assist with meal preparation in the home or who are re-heating meals in e.g., nursing homes can also utilize and benefit greatly from the automatic heating solution.
