Virtual conference: Advancing human-centred health and care through technology and ergonomics

On the 11th of December 2025 at 14:00 CET, experts from across Europe will gather online for the second interdisciplinary conference exploring how technology, ergonomics, occupational health and healthcare innovation can converge to support healthier, more active societies. The event, which is the second in the Technology for co-working on health and active life series, focuses on the transition towards human-centred AI and care practices, and is open to researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and health sector professionals.

Attendance is free of charge through sponsored registration.

Across Europe, healthcare systems are undergoing significant transformation. The demand for more efficient, person-focused and community-based care is growing, while healthcare workers themselves face increasing pressures. This workshop, organised by KOHS (Kompetenzzentrum für Organisation, Humanfaktoren und Sicherheit, Centre of Competence for Organisation, Human Factors and Safety, based in Vienna, Austria), with support from the AAL Programme, brings together leading voices to consider how technology and ergonomics can support both patients (primary users) and healthcare workers (secondary and tertiary users) in a balanced, integrated way.

Speakers will address key themes including:

  • Current challenges facing European healthcare systems
  • Community-based, collaborative approaches to healthy and active ageing
  • Open technology platforms, data structures and digital competences
  • Ergonomics and human-centred design in health system transformation
  • Joint cognitive systems and sociotechnical system design
  • Interdisciplinary and interprofessional education for future care models

Confirmed contributors include researchers and practitioners from universities and health organisations across Austria, Spain, Germany, Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine.

Call for Papers

The conference will produce a publication and short presentations of around seven minutes are welcomed.  If you wish to present and publish, please submit an abstract here by 15th November 2025.

Selected papers will be published in IETI TES (Transactions on Ergonomics and Safety) and/or IETI TERP (Transactions on Engineering Research and Practice).

Supported by the Bulgarian Association for Ergonomics and Human Factors (BAEHF), the Hungarian Ergonomics Society (MET), and the Technical Committee for Safety and Health of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA), this workshop aims to spark new collaboration formats that bridge research, practice and community-level health initiatives.

This is an important opportunity to rethink how we design health and care systems – placing people at the centre of meaningful digital innovation. Register NOW!
